The Seasons of the Vineyard

Visitors often arrive at the winery expecting the vineyard to look the same throughout the year. Then they return a few months later and discover something completely different.

One of the most fascinating aspects of wine growing is that vineyards are constantly changing. Every season brings a new stage in the life of the vine, and each stage plays an important role in the wines eventually produced from the fruit.

Winter is often the quietest time in the vineyard.

The vines are dormant, having shed their leaves and settled into a period of rest. While the vineyard may appear still, this is when growers begin pruning and preparing for the growing season ahead. Careful pruning helps determine how the vines will develop in the months to come.

As spring arrives, the vineyard begins to awaken.

Tiny green shoots emerge from the vines, and the landscape gradually turns vibrant and alive again. New growth appears almost daily, and the vineyard takes on a fresh energy after the winter months.

By early summer, the vines are growing rapidly.

Clusters of grapes begin to form as the vineyard canopy expands. Growers continue managing the vines to ensure balanced growth, healthy fruit development, and proper sunlight exposure throughout the season.

Then comes harvest.

For many wineries, harvest is one of the most exciting times of the year. Decisions about picking dates are carefully considered, balancing fruit maturity, flavor development, and vineyard conditions. Once harvested, the fruit begins its journey from vineyard to winery.

After harvest, the pace gradually slows.

The vines prepare for another period of dormancy while the vineyard transitions into autumn colors. Gold, amber, and crimson leaves create some of the most beautiful scenery of the year before eventually falling and beginning the cycle once again.

What many visitors find surprising is how much work takes place during every season.

Wine is often associated with the finished bottle, but every bottle begins with a year-round commitment to the vineyard itself. The changing seasons, weather, soil, and care provided throughout the year all contribute to the final result. Perhaps that's why vineyards are so captivating. They remind us that great wine is not created overnight.

It is shaped slowly, season by season, year after year, through a process that continues long before the cork is ever pulled.

The next time you visit the ranch, take a moment to look beyond the glass and out toward the vineyard. Chances are the vines are telling a different story than they were just a few months ago.
