The History of Zinfandel Wine

March 15, 2010 Zinfandel Wine
Zinfandel grapes make up about 10% of all California vineyards today and are making a comeback as a respectful varietal. The origins of the Zinfandel grape are traced to Croatia, where several indigenous Zinfandel grapes are found. In the 1700s, vines were introduced to Italy and by the 1800s, vines were brought to the United States and was soon the most widespread grape planted in California.
Many of these vines today, are considered "Old Vines" and are treasured for their rich production. Zinfandel grapes from the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA and Santa Clara Valley are known for their complexity and depth. Amador county Zinfandel is known for its big, full-bodied texture and flavor.
Under the Therese Vineyards label, comes a very full and bold Zinfandel from Amador County. The 2007 Zinfandel is bright with spicy cocoa, cherry, strawberry, blackberry and has hints of clove and sage. This wine has a nice bold acidity and chewy tannins to it and will continue to age gracefully. It has a nice residual sugar of .08 and a delightful alcohol content of 15.9%.
The J.D. Hurley label also makes a Zinfandel-the 2006 Zinfandel from the Santa Clara Valley. This award winning wine is a blend from two vineyards and on initial nose you will find hints of blackberry pepper jam. Flavors like black licorice and spice follow through and finish with long, polished tannins. Perfect with wood fired pizza! Theses wines are available from the Martin Ranch website.
Bottling Truck
Last week we had the bottling truck at the Winery to bottle up almost 1100 cases of wine. We bottled 2 separate Sauvignon Blancs, A Rose and the 2007 Merlot all under the J.D. Hurley label. Thanks to everyone for helping out! As always we had a lot of fun!
Come out to the Martin Ranch Winery on the 3rd weekend of the Month, when the Winery is open to the public and wine club members. We always look forward to seeing you!
